Can a Toothache Cause a Headache? Prevent Dental Emergencies Before Your Vacation
Vacations are for relaxation, adventure, and making memories. If that cruise is booked or the road trip is planned, it’s time to be brutally honest with yourself: are you nursing a painful toothache? Even if it comes and goes, a lingering issue like that can quickly escalate—and the last thing you want is a dental emergency while far from home.
Once a toothache sets in, it doesn’t just go away on its own. In fact, it will only get worse (and more expensive) the longer you ignore it. Plus, many people don’t realize that a toothache can cause a headache—yes, you read that right. That dull, throbbing pain in your jaw can easily radiate upward, triggering what’s often referred to as a toothache headache. So, if you’ve been brushing off both tooth and temple pain, now’s the time to take it seriously.
Don’t let the toothache you’ve been self-medicating or trying to ignore turn into a full-blown crisis just when you’re supposed to be unwinding. If you’re dealing with sensitivity, occasional pain, or swelling—now is the time to come in and get it checked out. Even if your discomfort seems minor or intermittent, underlying issues like decay, infection, or a cracked tooth can worsen at the worst possible time.
Ask yourself: is it better to take care of it now or risk a toothache causing a headache at 30,000 feet—or worse, while driving hours from the nearest dental office?
At Old Bridge Dental®, we offer prompt appointments to help you resolve dental concerns before they ruin the trip you’ve worked so hard to plan and save for. If you have a concern, let us take a look—and at the very least give you peace of mind. That way, the only thing you’ll be worried about is whether to book that extra excursion or where your next trip will take you!
What If a Toothache Erupts on Vacation?
If you’re already away and a toothache suddenly strikes, here’s what you can do to manage the pain until you can get to a dentist:
Rinse with warm salt water to soothe inflammation and help cleanse the area
Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed (unless contraindicated)
Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
Avoid hot, cold, or sugary foods that might aggravate the tooth
Visit a local dentist or urgent care if the pain becomes severe, you experience facial swelling, or notice pus or fever—these may indicate an infection
When you return home, give us a call. We’ll follow up with a comprehensive exam and make sure the problem is fully resolved—so it doesn’t come back to haunt your next vacation.
So, if you’re writing your packing list or tackling last-minute to-dos, don’t forget to add “schedule dental check-up” to that list. No concern is too small, because the only thing worse than a cancelled flight is a toothache you can’t get treated quickly—especially one that comes with a headache.
