The Link Between Mental Health and Oral Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the importance of emotional well-being and how it impacts every part of our lives - including our dental health. At Old Bridge Dental®, we believe in caring for the whole person, not just your teeth. That's why we're taking time this month to explore the powerful, often overlooked connection between mental and oral health.
Your mental health can actually directly influence your oral health in ways you might not expect! Anxiety, depression, and stress can all affect:
Oral Hygiene Habits:
When you're struggling mentally, it's common that brushing and flossing fall by the wayside. This increases your risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss.
Dietary Choices:
Whether you find yourself emotionally eating or experiencing a loss of appetite, your teeth and gums can both be impacted. Increased sugar consumption is equally as impactful as nutritional deficiencies.
Medication Side Effects:
There are many common medications for anxiety and depression that cause dry mouth, which also increases the risk of tooth decay and gum problems.
Teeth Grinding (bruxism):
If you've found yourself chronically stressed or anxious, you are probably familiar with jaw pain (TMJ). Clenching or grinding (even in your sleep) wears down and can even fracture your teeth; all of which puts strain on the jaw.
Dental health and mental health go hand-in-hand. We are no strangers to seeing patients whose self-esteem and overall quality of life has plummeted because of missing teeth, bad breath, or chronic pain. These struggles are often deeply rooted in one's anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal. We have also seen firsthand how restoring a patient's smile can, in turn, restore their emotional health too!
This is exactly why we strive to create a compassionate, judgment-free environment at Old Bridge Dental®. Whether it has been six months or sixteen years since your last dental visit, you will be met with understanding.
A Gentle Tip for Tough Days
If you're living with depression, we understand that even basic routines - like brushing your teeth - can feel overwhelming. On the days when getting out of bed feels like too much, consider keeping a few pre-pasted toothbrushes at your bedside. It's a small, simple step that can make a big difference without requiring too much energy.
Above all, please know you are not alone. We meet many patients who are navigating mental health challenges, and we want you to know that Old Bridge Dental® is a safe, judgement-free space. Today is a new day. When you feel ready, we are always just a phone call away and will meet you exactly where you are on your dental health journey.
If dental anxiety is holding you back from picking up the phone, we are here to tell you that our goal is for you to feel calm and in control from the very beginning. Starting over or starting anew - we cannot wait to see you.
