When it Comes to Jellybeans - Just say NO!

Have you ever noticed how many holidays involve candy? If you're walking into a store, chances are your eyes are going to land on a bag of delicious treats cleverly dressed up for the season!

Before you start filling those Easter Baskets, be sure to consider the good, the bad and the tooth-friendly! Anything sticky, chewy, hard or sour are big no-no's for your teeth.

We know you love jellybeans and that smooth tasty caramel, but the truth is you are increasing the risk of cavities. As for hard candies, you have to be careful as you are exposing your teeth to sugar for longer periods of time as it dissolves and biting down can even cause a tooth to crack! Anything acidic, such as a sour candy, weakens the enamel and makes teeth more vulnerable to decay.

So, what are you supposed to fill your baskets with?

  • Dark chocolate has less sugar and melts quickly (meaning less time on your teeth)
  • Chocolate-covered nuts are a great protein boost that are far less sticky than caramel or taffy
  • Cheese & Nuts - perhaps non-traditional, but great smile-friendly treats that balance acidity and protect enamel

If you simply cannot resist, be sure to enjoy treats in moderation, drink water after eating sweets, brush/floss 30 minutes after eating and schedule your post-holiday dental cleaning at Old Bridge Dental by calling (732) 967-2214 or visiting www.oldbridgedental.com.
